Motivating Yourself Through a Creative Block

We are halfway through the year already! Time moves so quickly, we’ve had hot sunny days as well as thundering stormy ones, but we have reached the point of our June blog post. As people we occasionally find ourselves stagnating and entering a headspace of unsureness of what comes next; this could happen in the middle of a project or possibly when coming up with something new. Here we will provide some advice to help you overcome your creative blocks and push through to your goals!

  • Assess Your Current State

Firstly, it is important to introspect and consider anything that could be inhibiting your ability to create or get new ideas rolling. Something as simple as cleaning up your workspace/living space can motivate you to get something started (your space often can influence/represent your state of mind). Giving yourself an organized schedule, especially if you work from home, allows you to dedicate time to productivity and divide rest from work.

  • Visualize Goals and Write Them Down

Developing a list of realistic goals and steps you can take to achieve them makes the act of pursuing them less stressful. We are all forgetful at times and lose our direction, so referring back to your own list can help keep yourself on track for the future. It is also important to remember that this list grows and changes with you so adding new plans or getting rid of those that don’t serve you is always okay.

  • Get Inspired!

Staring at a blank white page is not the ideal place for brainstorming and creating. But, looking online and seeing what other creatives are doing can provide motivation and inspiration. Magazines and Digests provide current industry concepts and innovative creations, it is also a great way to find new people who can be explored. For those who are familiar with Adobe suite, Behance is a website created by them for students and professionals alike to post their work and share their projects; another great place to see new ideas that can give you inspiration to develop your own.

Everyone goes through blocks no matter what field they’re in, so know that you’re not alone in this. Sometimes these blocks could mean that you need to take a break and revitalize, or even ask yourself where you want to go next. Talking to others, whether they are friends or mentors, is another great way to develop some accountability and moral support. Don’t forget to enjoy yourself and find the fun in what you do!
